“It’s apparent that ticks are becoming more of a problem,” says Dr. Joseph C. Cooney, an entomologist with TVA’s Water Quality and Ecology Branch in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. ‘‘From 1954 through 1968, the number of cases of spotted fever in the United States was less than 300 a year. But since 1969, spotted fever has increased to the point where 774 cases were reported nationally last year.”
