Early reports indicate that Virginia’s private woodland owners are once again among the leaders in the Nation in forest tree planting. Furthermore, the Virginia Division of Forestry tree nurseries produced a record number of seedlings which were sold to Virginia landowners. All Virginians can and should share in this accomplishment said State Forester WaUace F. Custard.
Virginia’s total reforested acres on non-government land exceeded 82,000 acres during the winter and spring planting season of 1975-76. Although this is a little shy of the targeted one hundred thousand acres hoped for, Custard explained that the economy and the weather are partially responsible for the shortage. It is important to note that Virginia’s small private landowners (the large forest industries not included) lead the nation in tree planting. The nearest competitor was North Carolina with 32,300 acres planted vs. Virginia’s 48,300 acres planted on nongovernment-non-industry
lands.
