ivuueri n. jaiuu^cu, Superintendent of Shenandoah National Park, announced today that a newly designed backcountry camping permit will soon be available at Shenandoah and at all other National Park System areas which allow backcountry camping. “These new permits will greatly reduce the amount of time that Park personnel presently spend compiling data associated with the location of camps, the numbers of people, the length of stay, etc., as a centrally-located Park Service office will be able to compile these data from copies of the completed permits. Computer analysis of this backcountry use data will quantify travel patterns and pinpoint the principal use areas.” Mr. Jacobsen said this information will be used in the formulation of appropriate management procedures necessary to protect the Park’s backcountry and wilderness resources. “The nearly 100,000 backcountry user nights recorded last year ranks Shenandoah well above any other National Park System area in the number of backcountry campers per acre of parkland.”
