All localities receive a basic payment of $9.75 per pupil from the state for yearly transportation costs, said Norton. In addition, the state pays 10 cents per mile and $431 per bus on a route, plus a gas tax refund, he noted.

Last year, Rappahannock received' approximately $40,000 for transportation from the state, according to Norton’s figures. Total costs of pupil transportation in Rappahannock were $98,792—more than double the state payment. For the state mandated kindergarten that begins next school year, transportation will account for half the total cost, said Norton. “Some counties pay only 20 to 25 per cent of the cost of transportation,” for the entire school program, he added.
