Seventh Congressional District Black Caucus representatives appeared before the Rappahannock School Board at Tuesday’s meeting to request an affirmative action program on hiring more black teachers in the county. While the School Board members made no formal commitment, they appeared to listen sympathetically.
Dr. H. M. Brooks, spokesman for the Black Caucus, presented figures on the number of black professionals in the district. Black teachers are becoming a thing of the past he said, adding that 20 year’s ago there were 29 black principals in the jurisdiction. “It’s hard to find one now ... In 17 counties, there is not one black lawyer, doctor or dentist. These are some of the things we’re concerned about.”
