News travelled through Amissville’s bird population this winter that Mrs. Frances Doyle served free seed dinners in her back yard. Apparently local black snakes interested in snacking on fresh, well-fed birds also got the word because last Wednesday, Mrs. Edith Jackson surprised two snakes lying in wait for unsuspecting birds.
Mrs. Doyle kept her feeders full during the long, hard winter and used over 100 pounds of seed. She attracted literally flocks of hungry birds to feeding stations built like miniature houses and stuck on tall poles, well out of the reach of prowling cats and other fourfooted predators. But she hadn’t bargained on snake attacks.
