Brooks added that the Black Caucus wanted special consideration given to black applicants, “qualified black applicants. We’re not saying hire someone just because they are black.” He said the Caucus expected each new black teacher to be an ambassador, paving the way for more. “Our ultimate aim is to try to make this a district we can all be proud of,” said Brooks.
“Thank you for coming to us and giving us a fresh point of view,” Norton told the Caucus representatives. He agreed that the small number of black professionals in the district was not a good situation and that the way to begin to correct things was at lower grade levels. “What you’re asking is that, as vacancies occur, we do our best to fill them with qualified black applicants and that we work out a recruitment deal with adjacent counties.” He told the Black Caucus members that the School Board would need to ^ discuss the problem further and indicated that it would be included on the following month’s School Board meeting agenda.
