in ivzj, xne national Woman’s Party persuaded members of each House of Congress to introduce joint regulations proposing an Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution. After 49 years of work, the proposal cleared the Congress on March 22, 1972, and went to the states for ratification. When 38 states have ratified it, it will be added to the Constitution as an article specifying: “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any other State on account of sex. Congress shall have power, by appropriate legislation, to enforce this article.” Individual states and the national government will then have 2 years to rid their legislation of sex bias before the Amendment becomiSsoperative. To this date, 36 states (not including Virginia) have ratified it. There are 2 years left for the last 2 state’s ratification.
