Reasons Obscure The reasons for the Reynolds appointment remain obscure, but there are a number of interesting theories which are worth noting. Indeed, some say that former Democrat Godwin has never felt completely vat home ■ campaigning for Republican candidates, and the bonds give him a convenient and completely credible “put” this year. One state senator went this one better. He opined last week that the appointment of Reynolds amounted to an old-fashioned Byrd organization type signal that Godwin was endorsing Reynolds for the lieutenantgovernorship.
This rather far-out theory had its counterpoint in an equally esoteric view from the GOP camp. By accepting the appointment, went the Republican version, Reynolds himself was sending a message to his conservative friends in the financial community that he was removing himself from his son’s campaign, and that these friends need not feel under any obligation to support the politically more liberal younger Reynolds.
A source dose to Richard Reynolds Sr. probably comes nearer the mark. In his view, Godwin made the appointment in order to bring a leader in the financial community into the bond campaign and at one and the same time give it a distinctly bipartisan flavor.
Some Republicans grump, however, that the governor could have done this without choosing the father of a Democratic candidate for statewide office.
