After returning to open session, the Supervisors unanimously authorized Chairman Pete Luke to notify the State Compensation Board of the Supervisor’s opposition to an additional deputy and full time secretary for the sheriff. The Supervisors also agreed to have Luke write the Mental Health and Retardation Program protesting the way the nutrition program got started in Rappahannock.
Sheriff Bill Buntin based his request for another deputy on increased county law enforcement activities. According to Buntin’s figures, the number of civil papers served rose from 543 in 1975 to 770 in 1976 while arrests jumped from 45 to 107 during the same period. He asked that Dick Jenkins, currently serving as correctional officer, be made abroad deputy with a yearly tikary of $8550. Buntin noted that the Compensation Board authorizes one deputy per 2000 population. According to this scale, Rappahannock is allowed two and a half fulltime deputies. The department is currently served by two.
