Before hearing from the next department, Luke asked if anyone in the audience had questions for the sheriff. The only comment came from School Board Chairman E. N. Montague. “You’re doing a good job,” he told Buntin.
Prior to hearing from Superintendent of Schools O. A. Norton, Luke addressed a few remarks to the school budget. “Last year, we went through a great big hassle fighting kindergarten...the best we could do was get it delayed for a year.” He noted that most of the increase in the school budget was attributable to implementation of the state-mandated kindergarten program and transportation costs. “I went through this ■ with a fine toothed comb,” Luke said of the school budget. “I don’t see the basis for cuts on operation of schools.”
Luke said he’d seen a few areas where minor cuts could be made but doubted if these would have a significant total. He noted that a decrease pf $14,000 was necessary to reduce the tax rate ten cents. “We’d have to do an awful lot of cutting to come up with $14,000,” Luke
