Lady Luck was riding with Zane Donalson last week when the navigational instruments in his Piper Cub went out while he was flying over Rappahannock’s mountains. The fog that shrouded the county on June' 14 lifted just long enough for him to spot an open field on the Bridges’ property near Gid Brown Hollow and he managed to set his plane down safely.
Donalson, a law enforcement officer from Pittsburg, was returning from Richmond when his instrument panel malfunctioned. He said that he flew blind for about a half an hour, following Route 211, until he saw a break in the clouds. The first field that he checked out for an emergency landing strip was spotted with rocks but a second on the opposite side of Route 622 looked suitable and he landed with no damage to his aircraft.
Donalson had left the plane and was walking out to the road when Jack Bruce found him. “He was just as calm as could be,” said Bruce. “He looked more like he was rabbit hunting” than coming away from a close brush with disaster.
