“No one’s questioning your judgment,” answered Masterson, adding that he neither favored nor opposed the procedure. However, he noted that School Board members might be privy to information from sources other than the Superintendent’s through personal cohtacts outside the county.
“Would the School Board be liable if they turned down an application on the basis of such personal information and the applicant found out about it,?” asked Carter. “How would the Board members distinguish between fact and hearsay?” he questioned.
The School Board members would be “derelict”' in their responsibility to protect community interests if they didn’t seek information on prospective employees from every source available to them, claimed Masterson. ;'f
Several Board members suggested the possibility of circulating resumes and applications for comment without calling the School Board into session.
“It’s the purpose of the administration to consider applications for employment and then present recommended choices to the Board for approval,” said Hogan. Involving the Board in preliminary work would be a duplication of service, he added.
