Bruce said he and his brother-in-law Thurman Hawkins, who was visiting from Miami, heard the plane circling. When they noticed that the engines went off, they decided to investigate. 4V Hawkins’ wife is a pilot, Said Mrs, Bruce, “so they were a little more aware of what was going on than we were. They knew a plane was landing.” Donalson was “rescued” and brought back to the Bruce’s home.
He expected to fly his plane out the following day when help arrived from Pittsburg. However, the other pilot didn’t show up until Friday. Donalson’s plane was started but unexpected difficulties were encountered and the Piper Cub was moved to James W. Fletcher's hangar in the F. T. Valley where it stayed before finally making the return flight to Pittsburg on Monday.
During his enforced stay in the county, Mrs. Bruce said that Donalson visited Washington and “was quite impressed with the little village.” She added that he was equally impressed with Rappahannock residents and found people from the county friendly and helpful.
