Discussions on federal and state mandates took up a considerable portion of time at the Rappahannock School Board’s four hour meeting on June 14. Once again, School Board members expressed dismay, consternation and disagreement with requirements forced upon localities by higher jurisdictions, jurisdictions.
Superintendent O. A. Norton asked the Board for authority to sign assurances of compliance on behalf of the county school system with the federal Rehabilitation Act. “This merely assures that we will comply with the handicapped law,’’ he said, adding that agreement was a prerequisite for any federal funding.
The Rehabilitation Act requires no immediate action from the county except signing the assurance form, said Norton. However, he added that there are "things down the road that we will be required to do two or three years hence that this law speaks to.”
