After the Supervisors continued to approve Sheriff Buntin’s mileage reimbursement requests, Davis threatened to sue both the Sheriffs Department and individual Supervisors. In March, 1977, he ordered an investigation of Rappahannock’s law enforcement office by the State Police and an audit of the Department by the Compensation Board.
The State Police investigation brought no results. However, in September, local law enforcement agencies throughout the state received notification that “mileage accumulated in routine checking of private
