1928. Aside from two years military service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, his employment at the White House spanned five presidential administrations from 1939 to 1965.
In 1953 he assumed the position of Maitre d ’hotel and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1965.
Surviving are one aunt, Mrs. Josephine Lawrence of Washington; two sons: Charles Jr. of Upper Marlboro, Md. and James S. of Washington; and one granddaughter. Also surviving are five sisters: Mrs. Annie Keyser, Mrs. Estelle Jeffries and Mrs. Flossie Malachi of Washington; Mrs. Clara Joyner of Mt. Union, Pa., and Mrs. Mary Anderson of Hillcrest Heights, Md.; two brothers: John and Samuel Ficklin of Washington; a devoted friend: Mrs. Mary V. Young of Washington.
Interment was in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery at Amissville, March 10 following funeral services at the Brookland Union Baptist church, Washington, D. C.
