However, all we have at this point are questions because Mr. Pete Luke, the Chairman of the Board of Supervisors refused to publicly confirm or deny what went on at the secret meeting of the Supervisors held on March 15th, even when asked by members of the Board of Zoning Appeals the following day. He stated that unless the BZA went into “executive session” neither he nor the Commonwealth Attorney would reveal what was discussed at the Supervisors meeting, notwithstanding the fact that the Zoning Ordinance, in Section 16-3-5, requires that all meeting of the BZA be open to the public.
Irrespective of how you feel about the proposed development of the Ski Area, these recent examples of attempts by certain local government officials to sidestep procedures for open hearings and to subvert the legal decision of the BZA should be condemned. Freedom of information is the key to a free and democratic government.
