Once the Thornton River is clean again, trout may return to Sperryville. Carson Johnson, one of the county’s premier trout fishermen, remembers the Thornton as a stocked trout stream ten or 15 years ago.
“The headwaters are still good trout fishing,” he reports, adding that he hadn’t seen any trout around the town for eight to ten years. After operation of the sewage treatment plant removes the danger of pollution, “there’s no reason why the Thornton couldn’t be a good trout stream all the way through town,” Johnson maintains.
