First, either puncture the egg on both ends and blow out the contents or cut an opening and empty the egg. (Gertrude prefers working with goose eggs because she likes their size and texture. She scrambles the insides and feeds them to the crows.)
To cut any openings in the egg shell, Gertrude uses a Dremel tool with a point and emory wheel and a pair of sharp pointed scissors. She advises using a face mask when working with the Dremel tool to avoid inhaling egg dust. If she wants a hinged opening, she cuts out a square piece of the egg and glues it into place.
"For decorating, I use almost anything I can get my hands on,” said Gertie.
