The Rappahannock Girls Track Team closed out a brilliant season on Saturday with a second place finish in the state meet at Charlotesville. A small army of fans from the county saw the lady panthers proudly capture the runner-up trophy with 44 points, losing out on the championship to Cumberland by only two points.
Luray was third with 38 points and Stuarts Draft, last year’s champion, was fourth with 23 points. Fifty-two schools competed in the meet. However, many failed to score.
Seven girls raced for Rappahannock. Jamelle Prudhum was a standout competitor, racking up 22 points for wins in the 220 and 440 yard dashes. She also anchored the mile relay team which placed second.
In the 220, Jamelle flew to a new state record of 25.7 seconds, lowering the old mark by .2 seconds. Her time in the 440 yard dash was only .3 second off the state record she set in 1976. Jamelle also holds the state record in the 100 yard dash but didn't compete in that event on Saturday.
Dawn Keithley sped to a first place finish and state championship in the 880 yard run. She pulled out in a fast start and held the lead throughout the race, pulling away at the finish. Her time of 2:29.6 was good enough for a school record but missed the state mark of 2:23.4 set in 1977. Lynnell Prudhum ran for a first in her heat of the 80 yard low hurdles and then came back in the finals of the event to place third. Her time of 11.4 seconds established a new school record.
