not always been, and are still not, a reality for many parts of the world. We, as citizens, are able to recognize when our leaders are leading us astray, but only because we have taken advantage of the opportunity for a liberal education in this country. Reading is the key to this liberal education.
This tradition must be continued if we are to preserve the Rappahannock heritage as well as the integrity of our Nation. We are not training our youth to leave the environment from which they came, but to better appreciate and protect the same. It is the people of the world who cannot determine their own fate who are always at the whim and mercy of misguiding leaders. Let’s pride ourselves on the fact that we have given our children, through the extra time and effort that it takes, and the leadership, the chance to determine their own fate.
Reading is an important medium through which students can learn about the world. It becomes a much stronger medium when it becomes an activity encouraged and aided by the persons a young boy or girl respects most, his parents.
An efficient water pump must be primed before it can soak up surrounding water. Similarly, a child’s brain has to be primed before he or she can accommodate the knowledge from a written text.
One learns to read by reading and the school is an appropriate setting for this activity. (But this is only one small part of the process that we call learning to read.) The background necessary for a child to become an adequate reader must come from his experiences in life. This is especially critical in the formative yean. Let’s give these kids a chance to be taught in the classroom by offering a helping hand at home. Let’s put a little more responsibility for the success of the students in our county on our own shoulden and not be so eager to point an ac- f cusing finger at educational administrators, programs or teachers. We can make everyone’s job easier by cooperating in an effort to reach the undisputed end. . The desired end being a literate society capable of dealing logically and intelligently with a challenging world.
