Dust on secondary gravel roads is a problem in Rappahannock and throughout the state. According to resident highway engineer Don Askew, the Highway Department has budgeted approximately $7,000 for dust control this year in the county.
Over $750,000 of the state budget has been allocated for Virginia's summer dust program. Ten thousand tons of calcium chloride, the major treatment, will be applied to more than 14,000 lane miles of the secondary road system. Recent research shows that along a dirt road as much as 28 tons of dust fines per lane mile are being lost each year.
Calcium chloride doesn’t come cheap. It costs between $70 and $80 per ton, according to Askew. “We use a mixture of salt and calcium chloride,” he noted. “It does just as good a job but it’s not quite as expensive.”
