least one or more of these persons, if my information is correct, may be directly or indirectly linked directly or indirectly to Secretary Rowe’s interests or persons close to him through the petroleum programs, politically or personally” (sic).
Investigation Urged
Lawson goes on to urge the governor to expedite the investigation as much as possible, and to make the findings public since he has been unable to find employment pending its outcome.
Whatever the validity —or lack thereof—of Lawson’s charges, there is a growing sentiment around the Capitol that an effort is being made, from some quarter, to make Lawson the fall guy for whatever mismanagement has taken place in the stateadministered aspects of the petroleum allocation program.
Administration officials and knowledgable legislators are maintaining a tightlipped silence on the subject.
“Somebody is trying to make Louis a scapegoat,” said a senior member of the House of Delegates, “but when Lawson says it’s Rowe, he’s fingering the wrong guy”
The legislator would not elaborate any futher, except to add, “When John (Dalton) gets to the bottom of this thing, some heads are going to roll.”
A spokesman for the Governor’s office said Dalton would have no comment on any aspect of the affair-until the investigation is completed.
But he would not say that the lawmaker’s estimate of Dalton’s reaction was overstated, either.
