things in the past. At mid-week, however, the charges and allegations touched some of the highest officials in the Dalton Administration, and that of his predecessor, former Gov. Mills E. Godwin Jr
These charges center around the sudden removal last March of Louis R. Lawson Jr. as director of the state energy office. The dismissal was announced in a terse statement from the governor’s office to the effect that Lawson was relieved of his responsibilities that same day. Within hours it became known that Dalton had launched a full-blown investigation of Lawson’s agency, and in an unusual after-hours raid, the records of the energy office were impounded by the state police.
That investigation is still in progress, and the nature of the charges involved are still a tightly guarded secret. They reportedly concern alleged "improprieties” by Lawson in the use of his expense account and the management of the agency.
Law$on, however, believes there is more to it than this, and that his dismissal was, in effect, both an act of revenge and an attempt to cover up far larger mismanagement— or worse — by his superiors.
