area owners, they have in presenting the merits of their case never suggested such an intimidating alternative if the County declined their proposal for year-round sport at the site.

The Board of Zoning Appeals and Supervisors should now take a longer look at the County’s best interest, and decide whether they want the proposed recreation area, providing clean industry and employment, or tax costly real estate housing development.

In our judgement, the Supervisors and BZA together should prepare a use permit which will enable the ski area proposal to go ahead within those specific constraints which will prevent its becoming any sort of future “Coney Island.”

An alternative solution is to call a referendum of County citizens to decide whether or not the year-round recreation area proposal should go ahead. If put to a referendum, there seems little question that the people of this County are going to overwhelmingly approve the ski area proposal. Businessmen and families should not be expected to swallow the proposition of refusing the sort of clean industry and employment opportunity which the ski area proposal offers. It is, to put it bluntly, simply stupid to pour taxpayers money into the sort of litigation now developing. This ski area proposal should be approved without further delay in the long range best interests of the County, either by referendum or by joint action of the Supervisors and the BZA.
