This Memorial Day weekend the Virginia State Police and the Highway Safety Division of Virginia will join highway patrols from Maine to Florida in a unified effort to save lives and energy.
The multi-state campaign is “Operation CARE” which stands for combined accident reduction effort.
State enforcement officers, with the support of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the U.S. Department of Energy, will pay special attention to speeds and other traffic law violators on Interstate 95 and other routes.
Col. D.M. Slane, superintendent, Virginia State Police, said that “since the 55 mph speed limit was enacted in 1974 it has resulted in a dramatic saving of lives on the nation’s highways.
“DOT information shows the 55 mph speed limit has been responsible for an annual savings of about 4,500 lives.
Litter Grants
Total $534,000 The Virginia Division of Litter Control says grants totaling S107.068 have been awarded to counties and cities throughout the state to $534,000. All told, $564,000 will be awarded this year under the Division’s grant program. Many of the most recent grant recipients plan to conduct public informationeducation programs which will bring to light the many issues surrounding the litter problem.
