Deer Kill Up
With over two weeks left in deer season, the number of animals harvested in the county is ahead of last year's tally, according to Rappahannock game warden Jim Bankston.
Bankston reported that over 200 deer had been killed as of last week compared to the 250 animals shot last year during the entire season in Rappahannock. Hunters have bagged five bears and five bobcats to date. Last year, said Bankston, only two bears were killed during hunting season.
Game is plentiful this year, Bankston explained, because the acorn and nut crops have been particularly heavy for the past two years providing plenty of feed. Wild life is coming down out of the mountains to eat in orchards because nuts and acorns are in short supply this winter in the higher elevations. Bankston added that the winter would be hard for wild animals if there was much snow fall.
According to the game warden, there has been only one hunting accident in Rappahannock this season. That came on November 25 when Jerry Lee Jenkins was shot in an accident near Flint Hill.
