Increase
Despite new procedures for counting travel, visits to Shenandoah National Park showed an increase for the month of November—the first monthly increase during 1978.
According to Superintendent Robert Jacobsen, the Park had 99,800 visits in November 1978, an increase of 9.8 per cent over the 90,900 visits in November 1977.
For Calendar Year 1978 compared with Calendar Year 1977, the decrease in visits stands at 31.5 per cent. Part of the reported decrease may be attributed to new procedures for counting travel instituted on January 1. 1978, that use a multiplier of 2.8 instead of 3.5 for converting vehicles to visitors. In addition, travel on only three secondary roads is being counted.
Overnight stays during November 1978 totalled 15.671 compared to 12,416 in November 1977, To date, Shenandoah Park has seen 541.654 overnight visitors this year compared to 584,957 for all of 1977. As measured at the Big Meadows weather station, the maximum temperature in November was 68 degrees, the minimum 20 degrees. Precipitation for the month measured 3.11 inches with snowfall totalling an additional two inches.
