Excessive speed on wet pavement can create similar problems with stopping as well as another phenomenon called “hydroplaning." Hydroplaning means the vehicle's tires lose contact with the road and the vehicle "water skis" along on a thin layer of water between the tires and the road. This loss of control can be avoided if motorists reduce their speed when traveling in wet weather and maintain good tires with sufficient tread.
