everything came to a halt until mom had untangled them. In the excitement several Christmas balls would slip and break and we would hold our breath for a minute, until we saw that mom wasn’t mad. She understood about little, anxious hands. Everyone helped with the tree trimmings and when it was completed I remember the only thing mom would rearrange would be some icicles clumped together on small branches.

Christmas Eve would be almost as big for us as Christmas Day. Mom and Kate, (my grandmother) would spend all day in preparing a Christmas Eve feast for the family. The old ham that dad raised and cured had been taken down from its wire hook in the meat house and cooked. A turkey basted in the oven while cranberries bubbled and popped on top of the old wood stove. Home-made bread was rising on the shelf above the stove, and sage stuffing filled the hpuse with a most delightful aroma. Mince and pumpkin pies and a home-made fruit cake lined the counter-top.
