Holiday drivers need to keep an ej'e on their speedometer and a light foot on their accelerator to prevent highway deaths and injuries this Christmas.
"Failure to observe the posted speed limit and to ease off the gas pedal when faced with adverse driving conditions is one of the biggest contributing factors to motor vehicle collisions,” according to John T. Hanna, director. Virginia Department of Transportation Safety.
Last year in Virginia some 18,000 crashes occurred in which there was some speed violation, either speed in excess of the statutory limit or speed too great for the existing conditions of the road, traffic, weather, vehicle or driver. “Because so many people have a tendency to rush through the holiday season motorists need to be careful their fast pace doesn't carry over to their driving," said the safety official.
