In those years during the 1950’s I remember the special, old-fashioned Christmases spent in Washington, Va. In those days December was always cold and Christmas Day was always white. Like a scene from a Currier & Ives Christmas card, so it was at our house, during Christmas.
The holiday season began with our big tree hunt. Everyone would wrap up in heavy coats, thick socks, and boots to search for the perfect tree. Sometimes we would walk for miles and cut down several trees before we found one that was tall enough, full enough, and green enough to please us all.
We took turns dragging the tree back to the car. By the time we did reach the car our fingers and toes would be numb from the cold. But we would laugh later and all agree that finding the right tree was worth a little inconvenience.
As soon as the tree was home, it was secured in the corner of the dining room. Boxes of decorations were then taken from the hall closet and everyone unpacked them. As usual the electric lights would be twisted and
