According to McDaniel, a special education vehicle with a hydraulic wheel chair lift is required to meet state and federal mandates for providing the same transportation services to handicapped and nonhandicapped students alike.
Budget Shortfall
Following the bus bid opening after the executive session, the school board voted to purchase two Bluebird buses at a total of S35.365.66.
The Bluebird bid was the highest received, running from S300 to $600 per bus over the other two prices quoted. Dr. Bloomer noted, however. that Rappahannock's experience showed that the Bluebird buses have better gas mileage. In addition, most of the buses in the school's transportation fleet are Bluebirds, allowing parts to be interchanged from one bus to another.
The vote to buy the buses came despite a S3.000 shortage in the amount budgeted for replacement of vehicles. The 1979-80 school budget includes only S32.400 for the purchase of two replacement buses while the Bluebirds approved by the
