When the fuel cap is removed, there is a tendency for the gasohol to spurt out of the fuel tank. If the fuel tank is mounted over the engine, as it h in many tractors, the hot engine could cause a fire from this eruption.
Gasohol also causes rapid deterioration of gaskets and seals in the carburetors and other fuel system components. This cause leakage problems which are a serious fire hazard, says Hetzel.
Missing heat shields, faulty mufflers and leaky manifolds can cause excessive heat to reach the fuel tank. This causes high pressure in the fuel system which adds to the possibility of a bad leak from a blown gasket.
Gasohol should be stored in underground tanks to prevent high vaporization losses. No components of the fuel system should contain aluminum parts,. Alcohol picks up aluminum oxide and water to form a milky sludge that can clog fuel systems.
Users can expect some vapor lock problems in hot weather as well as hard starting in cold weather with gasohol. Carburetor icing may also occur in cold weather.
“Gasohol can be used safely and it is one of the partial answers to our fuel shortages." Hetzel says. “However, it does require careful handling to be safe.”
