The legend recalls his improbable feat of hurling a silver dollar across the Potomac River. But the story does serve a purpose. It underscores the fact that Washington’s six-foot frame was not by accident.

Whatever his temptation he did not abuse his body, he built it. He disciplined his habits. He developed his stamina. He trained for hardship. And with this healthy physique, he not only enjoyed life, he also furnished the leadership to a faltering country and provided the glory of our present day independence.

Then that final memory. The picture of General Washington on his knees, in the snow, at Valley Forge!

It was winter. There was war. In \lfl it had been a long war. There was weariness—a desperate weariness and worry.

In prayer he sought reinforcements, vigor to his faltering spirit, vitality to a flagging courage, direction to be born out of confusion.

In trusting faith, he sought divine strength when all human resources seemed drained and empty.

And George Washington went on to win!
