Do they? Is that why supporters of the proposed ordinances—natives of Rappahannock and long-time residents—are afraid to voice their support at public hearings?

And they are truly afraid. They’ve told us so. They don’t want to be quoted in the newspaper because they fear retaliation. They worry about someone burning their barn or shooting their cattle.

Are they afraid of the boys from Stanley? Not likely. How many Stanley residents read accounts of public hearings in the Rappahannock News? These county farmers and landowners are afraid of their neighbors right here in Rappahannock

We shudder at the possibility that their fears may be founded. The chance that there are people here who will strike if their “right” to carry a loaded rifle or shotgun in a vehicle is challenged is all the more reason why Rappahannock County needs these new laws. 1
