Planner
The Piedmont Environmental Council's President, Chaplin B. Barnes, has announced the addition to the Council’s staff of Velma M. Smith who will serve as Planner and Local Government Representative.
Smith, a magna cum laude graduate in journalism of the University of Georgia, holds a Masters in Planning from the University of Virginia.
She has most recently been employed by Loudoun County as Environmental and Agricultural Planner for the Department of Planning and Zoning. In Loudoun, she played an active role in the formation of Agricultural and Forestal Districts. (Ag District applications for over 50,000 acres have either been approved in recent months or are currently pending in that county.) She also helped to write the environmental and energy portions of the County’s first area plan.
At PEC, she will continue to assist in promoting the formation of agricultural districts throughout the Council's nine county region, which includes Rappahannock County. She will also work closely with local planning officials on the variety of other land use planning and „ conservation issues in which the Warrenton based Council is involved.
