A service of deconsecration was held October 3 at the former Washington United Methodist Church which has been sold to the Town, of Washington for use as a town hall. The church organization had disbanded earlier this year.
In a word of intent, the Rev. Peter Weems, expressed thanks for the use of the building as a place of worship and declared that the building should no longer be set aside as a special place for worship.
In a prayer Rev. Weems asked that God’s love continue to be poured out for all, that no one be disheartened as the building’s function ended as a consecrated place of worship, and that its previous association with the church become a powerful source of strength for all.
He continued by giving thanks for all who struggled there in past years, for their service to be witness to the community. He gave thanks for the lives that had been touched by the ministry of the church and offered praise for the continuing stewardship of these members.
In the benediction Rev. Weems said, “And now, as the Washington United Methodist Church moves on to join with other congregations, continuing its work with them—we let our building go, in the hope that it .will continue to serve the community well in the future.”
