an assortment of turquoise and Black Hills gold jewelry. Any listing of the gift I selection at the Swindlers would have to leave many things out: their inventory covers huge showrooms on two levels.
Tucked away in one comer of the upstairs display area is > a decorated Christmas tree. On it and on several shelves nearby are grouped handmade calico ornaments and special children’s Christmas presents. Phyllis Swindler is hoping that Rappahannock people will take advantage of her gift shop when it’s time to start Christmas shopping.
“Many people think we just cater to tourists on their way to or from Skyline Drive,” she said. "But we try to carry a complete line of gifts that local people might need. Many of our neighbors here don’t realize that we carry items of interest to them, too. And shopping here could save a lot of trips and a lot of gas.”
The gift shop is a second career for James Swindler, who retired from the service to return to his hometown of Sperryville. He and Phyllis lived in Massachusetts, Turkey and Japan, before opening their first business here, the House of Baskets, in 1971. Their interest in local baskets, especially the study, ribbed baskets of white oak splits, is evident in the large inventory in the lower level of their gift shop. In 1973, they launched Country Manor with the construction of the huge new building on Route 211. These days, the store is filled with tourists from all over the country who have come to enjoy Skyline Drive during the colorful fall season.
