Johnson maintained that existing laws are enough to correct the situation faced by Sperryville merchants. “I don’t think that Sperryville is as bad as some people think,” he continued. “I’ve been around the Exxon station for 10 years and I've never had a minute’s trouble. They didn’t even soap my windows on Halloween night,” Johnson said, maintaining that difficulties with loiterers depend in large part on the way owners operate their businesses.
"I don't see where we need another county ordinance,” he concluded, suggesting that action against Sperryville’s idlers be taken under trespass charges.
Supervisor Clarence Baldwin agreed that new laws are unnecessary. In addition, he noted that during his 21 years of operating a country store, he’s never had to call law enforcement personnel for assistance.
