Three years after a citation from the state fire marshal for fire code violations, the Rappahannock supervisors finally appear ready to correct the court house's safety deficiency by authorizing construction of a wooden fire escape from the second floor.
“Now we come down to the famous subject of a fire escape,” said supervisor chairman E. P. Luke at Monday’s board meeting. He noted that state specifications for fire exits from historic buildings had been changed since Rappahannock’s fire code violation was first pointed out and now an escape from the second floor can be constructed of wood instead of expensive steel.
"The problem is how to get the job done now that (county engineer) Fanning (Baumgardner) isn’t available," Luke said.
