Forest and a discussion of research on the American chestnut. Also covered will be conversion of low quality hardwood stands to pine, wildlife management for game and non-game species and timber stand improvements through firewood harvests.

The Charlottesville area forestry and wildlife bus tour on October 22 will stop first at Simeon Farm, a forest property that includes both fish and wildlife.

Other stops will be Southwest Mountain Farm to observe a whole tree chip harvesting operation; John Marcus tract for a demonstration on fire line construction and use of rum chopping and fire as preparation for planting loblolly pines; lunch at Ashlawn, home of President James Monroe; a 30-year-old loblolly plantation and the Johnson tract for firewood management, solar drying and marking for timber stand improvement.
