The adjusted 1981-82 school budget leaves raises at 12.4 percent for the the first time, provides for partial payment of hospitalization premiums for all school employees.
At Tuesday night's meeting, the board adopted a package adjustment proposed by Newbill Miller and Nancy Reeve to absorb the S89.100 cut from the school budget last week by the supervisors. Rather than reducing categories, the supervisors trimmed the bottom line from $2,278,586 to $2,189,486. suggesting that raises be kept at 10 percent in line with other county employees.
"Buildings don't educate—teachers do! We must retain as good a teaching staff in this county as we can,” Miller said, in defense of the 12.4 percent salary increase. He added that if the supervisors had felt strongly about holding raises to 10 percent, they ' could have reduced the category which includes salaries for instructional personnel.
Under the Miller-Reeve plan, the $89,100 cut by the supervisors will come from the following budget items:
