“Of about IS kinds of ticks in Virginia, only three are common pests of man,” Robinson explains. “These are the American dog tick, the lone star tick and the brown dog tick. The first two, but especially the American dog tick, transmit RMSF.”

The adult of the American dog tick is brown, with many spots or streaks of white on the back. These ticks have been found in over 50 counties and 15 cities in Virginia, from the Atlantic coast to the mountains, but mostly in the Piedmont region.
