In fact, the mopeds are not covered either for liability coverage or for physical damage coverage (fire, theft, collision, etc.) under either policy.
Insurance for mopeds can be purchased separately under a basic automobile policy (as opposed to a personal auto policy) for both liability and physical damage. Also, many companies offer a recreational vehicle policy, which covers snowmobiles, mopeds, allterrain vehicles, and the like. Premiums for moped coverages are relatively low.
Commissioner Newman urged all moped operators to check with their insurance agent to make sure they are properly covered.
