—Spray shoes and clothes with mosquito or other insect repellent before going into areas where ticks might live.

—Examine yourself and your children for ticks several times a day. Look for them in the hair, armpits and groin. Ticks seldom attach in less than three to four hours.

—Remove ticks immediately. Pull them out gently by grasping them at the head end and using a slow, steady pull. Be careful not to break off its mouthparts. Apply an antiseptic to the bite site, then wash your hands well with soap and water to reduce the risk of spreading disease.

—Pet owners are advised to examine their animals frequently. Light infestations can be controlled by rubbing carbaryl (Serin) dust into the pet’s hair.

Also treat the animfcl’s sleeping quarters and replace old bedding with fresh, untreated bedding. Look for attached ticks especially on the neck, in and about the ears, under legs and between toes.
