brown and marked on the back with a single white spot (female) or with two white spots near the end of the back (male). These ticks are not widely distributed in Virginia. They have been recorded in about 35 counties.

The brown dog tick is uniformly dirty brown and the most uncommon of the three. It is satisfied with dogs as a host. This tick will infest homes and other buildings if dogs are present, but seldom bite people.

In Virginia, they are a household problem chiefly in the winter, because they can survive only in heated buildings. The brown dog tick does not transmit RMSF.
