Since his hives are so close together, Pullen has hit upon an ingenious way to gather honey. “It was hard for me to get the honey,” he said. “You don’t want to use much smoke or the honey will taste smoky. So, there’s always some bees still following the cap and in a matter of seconds the cap is black with bees trying to rob the honey.
“I use a sheet and a tin hive top. I set the supers over the tin to catch the drips then wrap them in a sheet to keep off the robber bees. When I’m through I give the few trapped bees a little smoke and then carry the honey out.”
