With the ripening of strawberries, the pick-yourown season in Virginia swings into high gear.

A pick-your-own berries guide, available free from the state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, lists several farms in the county or within easy picking distance of Rappahannock.

Jordan River Farm in Huntly on Route 637 offers organically grown pick-your own or picked-to-order strawberries expected to be available from June 1-30. Customers are asked to call 636-9388 for daily hours.

Hartland Orchard in Markham (364-2316) has pick-your-own Montmorency cherries that will be ready by the middle of June.

By the middle of August, late summer raspberries will be ripe for picking at Harmony Hollow Orchard (637-2009) in Front Royal.

In neighboring Fauquier County, Manor Lane Farm (347-4883) off Route 211 four miles west of Warrenton, has pick-your-own strawberries, containers furnished, from May 10 through Juen 20.

Danny's Market in Luray (778-2772) and Future Farmers Of America at the high school in Madison (9486338 and 948-6350) will have strawberries for picking from the middle of May through the middle of June.

Rapidan Berry Gardens' toll free number (800-5722262) will give prospective pickers information on when strawberries, raspberries and boysenberries will be ready.
